Problem when replacement motherboard default bios doesn't recognise upgraded CPU

Tyan Tiger MPX, bios chip

I recently had to replace my Tyan Tiger MPX motherboard after many years of faithful service, however I discovered that the new motherboard's old default bios would not recognise the upgraded CPUs now fitted and it would not boot.

As it would not boot on the new CPU and because I no longer had the old CPU that was supported I now had no way to flash the BIOS to the newer version that does support my CPUs. I had "painted my self into a corner" and seemed to have no way out. I now thought I would have to junk two motherboards and two CPUs.

Then I hit upon the idea of swaping over the BIOS chips and fortunately the Tyan Tiger MPX has socketed BIOS chips and not soldering in. With a screwdriver I carefully prised out both chips (circled in red) and placed the original chip in the new motherboard and it worked!!!!!

This is why I tend not to upgrade my computer in chunks. I buy a new motherboard and processor at the same time, and if they don't work together I can speak very sternly to the salesperson...

Very good point. I do that too.
This time I had previously upgraded the CPU's and there where two of them.
thanks for your comment.
